There have been two recent announcements of brewery closings in the San Antonio area, and considering the current saturation of the market, I expect more in the coming months. Weathered Souls Brewing announced its closure over a month ago, and that one has since shut its doors for the last time. And just recently, Busted Sandal Brewing issued a statement that they will be closing all three of their locations.

Weathered Souls Director of Sales and Marketing Kimberly Machado had the following statement about why the brewery would be shuttering:

The industry has been facing several challenges, and for us, the rising costs of ingredients and a noticeable decline in alcohol consumption played a significant role in our decision. Despite our best efforts to adapt, the financial pressures became difficult to sustain. It was a tough choice, but after careful consideration, we felt it was the right time to close this chapter.

The brewery had attempted to expand to a tap room in Charlotte, NC in 2022, but that closed down after six months due to financial struggles. They also had to deal with the higher cost of ingredients due to supply chain issues dating back to COVID. And one of the brewers and founding members, Marcus Baskerville, decided to leave earlier this year. Weathered Souls opened in 2016 and became one of the top breweries in Texas, winning multiple awards, and it was particularly noted for its Black is Beautiful movement. Machado had the following to say about the company’s legacy:

Our hope is that when people talk about Weathered Souls in the future, they remember the community we built, the creativity we poured into every brew, and the way we pushed boundaries to give San Antonio something it had never seen before.

As for Busted Sandal, they are currently in the process of closing all three of their locations. In an Instagram post, they said that they had “no more tricks up our sleeves” to keep the company open. They went on to say the following:

We are truly appreciative of the decisions you have all made to support our business the best you could in the past few years during tough times. If we could simply charge $12 for pints of beer to cover the increased costs of doing business, we would… but the beer industry doesn’t operate the same way other inflation-ridden goods and service industries can.

The brewery location in North San Antonio had its farewell party on October 12th. The Helotes beer garden will close on November 12th, and the Kerville location will close on November 10th. Busted Sandal opened in 2013 and has put out several award-winning beers over the years while also expanding to three locations. The Instagram post concluded with the following statement:

Again, we are sad to close the doors and say goodbye to you all. We will miss you tremendously!

The San Antonio area (including the Hill Country) has over two dozen breweries along with quite a number of taphouses, and costs have been going up on the ingredients to make beer. Second Pitch Brewing in North San Antonio closed earlier this year and an attempt to re-open failed.  Black Laboratory cut back on the beers it is brewing to focus more on hard seltzer, and it is possible we might see similar moves with other breweries as well as more closures. But for now, at least, we should do what we can to support our favorite breweries that are still open.

Our Comments: This is a wonderful little brewery and restaurant on the north side of town. They have an ever-changing selection of beers that they brew on premises with plenty of taps to choose from (if you are feeling particularly adventurous, try the Fruity Pebbles gold milk stout). They are also baking up some excellent pizza pies and other tasty dishes, so you certainly cannot go wrong at this place!

For many years in the United States, lagers and pilsners dominated the market with names like Budweiser, Miller, and Coors becoming basically synonymous with beer.  But with the rise of the craft beer movement, different styles have started to gain more acceptance such as ales, porters, stouts, and wheat beers.  (You can see a quick rundown of beer styles here.)  Among these other variations, pale ales have become particularly popular and currently hold a notable share among the craft brews currently produced.

Pale ale is characterized by its pale, golden color, and it typically has a hop-forward flavor profile. It is most often brewed using pale malted barley and features a moderate to high level of hop bitterness, and it typically contains notes of citrus, pine, and floral aromas. That will vary with the different varieties, though, as each has its own unique characteristics.  Following are several common types of pale ale:

American Pale Ale: This style of pale ale originated in the United States and is known for its aggressive hop character. It typically features a medium body, moderate to high hop bitterness, and a citrusy, piney flavor profile.  Examples: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Dogfish Head Shelter Pale Ale.

English Pale Ale: This style of pale ale originated in England as the title indicates and is known for its balanced hop and malt character. It typically features a medium body, moderate hop bitterness, and a biscuity, caramel flavor profile.  Examples: Bass Pale Ale, Boddington Pub Ale, Sam Adams Boston Ale.

Belgian Pale Ale: This style of pale ale is known for its fruity and spicy character. It typically features a medium body, low to moderate hop bitterness, and notes of fruit, spice, and yeast.  Examples: Orval Trappist Ale, Leffe Blonde, Ommegang BPA.

India Pale Ale (IPA): This style of pale ale originated in England and is known for its high hop bitterness and strong, complex flavors. It typically features a medium to full body, high hop bitterness, and a citrusy, piney flavor profile.  Examples: Lagunitas IPA, Stone IPA, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA.

New England IPA: This style of pale ale, also known as Hazy IPA, originated in the Northeastern United States and is known for its hazy appearance and juicy, tropical fruit flavors. It typically features a medium body, low to moderate hop bitterness, and a creamy mouthfeel.  Examples: Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA, Avery Brewing Nomadic Dreamer, Sam Adams Wicked Hazy Juicy New England IPA.

West Coast IPA: This style originated on the West Coast of the United States, particularly in California. It is known for its bold and hoppy flavors, high bitterness, malty backbone, and it typically has a higher alcohol content.  Examples: Green Coast Brewing West Coast IPA, Stone Brewing Ruination IPA, Weathered Souls West Coast IPA.

Session Pale Ale: This style of pale ale is known for its low alcohol content and easy-drinking character. It typically features a light to medium body, low hop bitterness, and a crisp, refreshing finish.  These are good for beginners to pale ales or those who do not like the bolder IPAs.  Examples: Founder’s Session All Day IPA, Full Sail Session Hazy IPA, Deep Ellum Easy Peasy IPA.

There are other variations of pale ale out there as well, and the many craft brewers are coming up with their own distinct brews all the time.  Feel free to share some of the pale ales you have enjoyed in the comments below.

Our Comments: No matter how many breweries I have been to in San Antonio and beyond, I always find myself returning to Weathered Souls for the vast selection and guaranteed first-rate brews. The West Coast IPA is one of the best in the city. (Dare I say the country as well?) The New England IPA Who’s Got the Juice Now? is a good choice as well, and they always have a dark beer to tempt you even if you are not a particular fan of those. This place sets the bar for the other breweries in town and in the surrounding area (pun unintended but accepted).  You can read my tasting review here.

From Their Website: We’re not a chain and our beer is not mass produced. We buy our grain locally and deliver to San Antonio, Houston, Austin and South Texas.

We are independent and with the support of independent loving fans, we intend to stay that way. You can’t be closer to the source of your beer than to sit in the shadow of the fermenter your beer was kegged from days before. If you wander too close to the brewfloor, we’ll try to educate you on all things beer. And maybe you’ll love it. The name says it all, we’re a little weathered by life and really don’t mind it. All part of the adventure…

Weathered Souls is very happy to be a brewery where everyone is welcomed as a member of our brewery family. We have several old-school philosophies about life and business and one driving force is our philosophy that, if the beer is good enough, folks will find out. So we don’t pay for advertising, we rely on word of mouth just like my Dad did. It’ll take longer to grow our business, but it gives us a lot of satisfaction knowing that we succeed because folks care about us and our beer.

So, here’s to seeing you in the taproom someday and Drink Local, Cheers!
